Understanding by Design
Still from Grant Wiggins — Understanding by Design (1 of 2)

Understanding by Design (UbD) is a curriculum design framework developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. Its goal is transferable understanding: not merely recalling information, but using knowledge and skills in situations that do not exactly reproduce those already practised.

The framework is known for backward design. Planning begins with desired results and big ideas, then determines what evidence would credibly demonstrate achievement. Only then are activities, content and sequences planned.

UbD is neither a lesson outline nor a particular teaching method. It checks alignment between goals, assessment and learning experience, helping us avoid activities chosen only for their appeal or content included merely because it has always been on the syllabus.
