Intended learning outcomes: Susanna Sancassani’s approach

Intended learning outcomes (ILOs) state what learners should know, understand or be able to do at the end of a programme or part of it. In the MOOC coordinated by Susanna Sancassani, their formulation belongs to a design process connecting outcomes, assessment strategies, activities and resources.

An outcome is not simply a topic, nor a description of what the teacher will do. It must make a learner’s performance recognisable. Verb choice therefore matters: broad verbs such as “know” can be clarified through observable actions consistent with the required cognitive level.

An outcome becomes operational when checked against evidence. If a person is expected to argue, design or evaluate, the programme must offer opportunities to practise that capability and an assessment in which to demonstrate it. Outcomes thus connect the elements of an aligned learning design.
