Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework developed by CAST to improve teaching and learning by addressing human variability. Version 3.0 organises its guidance around three principles: multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression.

UDL invites us to design goals, assessments, methods and materials that proactively reduce barriers. It does not require a separate programme for every individual or simpler goals. It proposes options and support that enable access and participation without imposing a single compulsory way of learning.

Version 3.0 explicitly foregrounds learner agency. Applying the framework begins with identifying the goal, distinguishing it from the particular means of achieving it, and examining barriers created by the design itself.
