Emma Castelnuovo

Emma Castelnuovo

Emma Castelnuovo was born in Rome in 1913 and graduated in mathematics in 1936. The racial laws of 1938 prevented her taking up the teaching post she had won; she taught in Rome’s Jewish schools before going into hiding. After the war she returned to public education, teaching at Torquato Tasso middle school until 1979.

She renewed geometry teaching through objects, movement, real problems and hypotheses. She published Geometria intuitiva and Didattica della matematica, collaborated with CIEAEM and sustained a dialogue between research and classroom practice. She turned one hundred in 2013 and died in Rome in 2014. ICMI named an international award after her.
