Lorenzo Milani

Lorenzo Milani

Lorenzo Milani was born in Florence in 1923 into an educated, non-practising family. After his conversion he entered the seminary and was ordained in 1947. In San Donato di Calenzano he organised an evening school for young workers. In 1954 he was transferred to Barbiana, a small village in the Mugello.

There he and his pupils built a full-time school centred on language, newspapers, collective writing and the knowledge needed to exercise one’s rights. Barbiana’s experiences informed works such as L’obbedienza non è più una virtù and Lettera a una professoressa. He died in 1967. His work remains closely connected to resistance against educational exclusion and cultural inequality.
