Thích Nhất Hạnh

Thích Nhất Hạnh

Thích Nhất Hạnh was born in Huế, Vietnam, in 1926 and entered a monastery at sixteen. A Zen monk, poet and teacher, he sought to renew Buddhism through engagement with contemporary social problems. In the 1960s he founded the School of Youth for Social Service, Van Hanh Buddhist University and the Order of Interbeing, promoting nonviolent action during the Vietnam War.

Forced into exile, he taught internationally and founded the Plum Village community in France in 1982. His approach connected mindfulness with daily life, deep listening, reconciliation and peace. In his final years he returned to Từ Hiếu Temple, where he died in 2022.
