Célestin Freinet

Célestin Freinet

Célestin Freinet was born in Gars in the Alpes-Maritimes in 1896. Seriously wounded in a lung during the First World War, he began teaching in Bar-sur-Loup in 1920. Seeking a school closer to children’s lives and working-class experience, he experimented with inquiry walks, free writing, printing, school newspapers and correspondence.

These techniques belonged to a cooperative organisation of work and a popular pedagogy, rather than being isolated exercises. With Élise Freinet he opened a school in Vence in 1935. Arrested and interned during the war, he rebuilt the movement afterwards; it became the Institut Coopératif de l’École Moderne in 1947. He died in 1966.
