Giuseppina Pizzigoni

Born in Milan in 1870, Giuseppina Pizzigoni qualified as a teacher in 1888. She soon criticised schooling based on immobility, verbal instruction and content disconnected from life. After studying European educational experiences, she developed an experimental method grounded in direct experience, work, nature and observation.

In 1911 she founded the Scuola Rinnovata in Milan. The project grew into a purpose-designed building opened in 1927, bringing architecture and pedagogy into dialogue. She published Linee fondamentali e programmi della Scuola Rinnovata in 1922. After retiring from its leadership in 1929, she continued training teachers. She died in Saronno in 1947.
