Roberto Sardelli

Roberto Sardelli

Roberto Sardelli was born in 1935 and became a priest, educator and writer. Assigned to Rome’s San Policarpo parish in 1968, he met families living in shacks beside the Acquedotto Felice and chose to share their circumstances. In shack number 725 he opened a popular school for young people marginalised by public schooling.

Scuola 725 went beyond remedial education. It sought critical awareness, command of language and participation in struggles for housing and social rights. Running until 1973, it produced newspapers, drawings and the collective book Non tacere. Sardelli continued his cultural and social work until his death in 2019.
