Index for Inclusion

Index for Inclusion

The Index for Inclusion, developed by Tony Booth and Mel Ainscow, supports inclusive development in schools and educational institutions. It is not a test awarding an inclusion score: it offers indicators and questions through which a community examines its situation and identifies priorities for change.

Its three interdependent dimensions are creating inclusive cultures, producing inclusive policies and evolving inclusive practices. Attention shifts from supposed individual deficits to barriers to learning and participation in relationships, spaces, rules, curricula and teaching.

Practical work involves people in different roles, discussion of the indicators, recognition of resources and obstacles, and a small set of priorities reviewed over time. Its value lies in the quality of participatory discussion, not the mechanical completion of a questionnaire.
