Flipped Learning

Flipped Learning
Book cover: Giunti Editore

Flipped Learning is an approach to organising learning associated with Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams. Some initial exposure to content moves outside shared time, often through short materials, so that face-to-face or synchronous sessions can focus on application, discussion, production and support.

It does not simply mean watching videos at home and doing exercises at school. The reversal makes sense when the time released supports more active learning and preliminary access does not become a barrier. Learners need clear instructions, alternative ways to access materials and an opportunity to reveal questions or understanding before working together.

Bergmann and Sams describe a shift from teacher presentation to a classroom where the teacher can follow students’ activity more closely. Quality depends on the design of the whole cycle, not on the technology used to deliver a resource.
